How to winterize your irrigation system

Autumn maintenance prevents freeze damage. A short checklist can save expensive spring repairs.

Why winterization is critical

Water left in pipes can freeze, expand and crack components. Damage often appears only at spring startup.

When to do it

Start when night temperatures are consistently low and before the first hard freeze in your area.

Manual draining steps

Shut supply, run zones briefly to release pressure, open drain points, clean filters and switch controller off.

Using an air compressor

For larger systems, blowout helps remove residual water. Use safe pressure limits and short cycles per zone.

Spring startup check

Repressurize slowly, test each zone and inspect sprinklers, joints and filters before returning to normal operation.
