Irrigation solenoid valve: how to choose and wire it
Guide to irrigation solenoid valves: operating voltage, flow rate, common wiring, and diagnosing faults.
How it works and wiring
Irrigation valves operate at 24 V AC. A shared common wire (COM) returns current from all valves to the controller; individual coloured wires switch each zone. Six zones need seven wires, not twelve.
Valve that does not open: check 24 V AC at solenoid terminals. Valve that does not close: remove and rinse the diaphragm under running water.
